Research - Andrew Goodwin: 'Dancing in the Distraction' Theory

Rethinking narrative analysis

Theory: traditional narrative conventions applied to most media texts such as films, do not apply to music videos in the pop genre.

The reasons for this are because
  1. The video is built around the song - Songs often repeat the same beats/lyrics, they do not have a beginning, middle & end. Therefore they cannot tell a straight structured narrative story.
  2. The artist plays both narrator & character - Making it difficult to fully create a conventional on-screen story with specific characters playing particular parts.
  3. Singer often makes direct eye contact with the camera - in order to enhance performance by involving the viewer & giving them a direct performance. Whereas looking into the camera is a strong rule that is rarely ever broken in more conventional texts such as TV, which show a literal telling of a story/events.
