EVALUATION: Q4

What I have learnt through audience feedback

MUSIC VIDEO audience feedback
What I learnt from this feedback was....

Most importantly: It is okay to take inspiration from other products and artists! As long as you are not  literally copying then the audience seem to like it and put your artist on a comparable level with the artist you imitated. We had so many compliments about how our artist's costume, makeup, and overall brand image reminded them of Taylor Swift! With NO complaints of copying.

Secondly, audiences enjoy seeing variety within music videos (for example costume changes) - However they must have a clear link and not be totally random to show that the artist is in a certain niche (indie) and therefore give the impression that Eva Ellis really knows what she is doing.

Surprisingly! Almost as soon as an audience views a music video, they are already expecting and awaiting the rest of the promotional products to look similar. When we asked what they'd expect to see on the digipak of the artist in our video, most mentioned natural locations, and the same makeup and colours again. This is exactly what I did when it came to producing my ancillary products! Gave the consumers what they wanted

Both the good and bad comments on my ancillary have taught me many things.

Firstly, whether a viewer is already a fan or not - they like to see effort put into recreating the stereotypical conventions of products (when Doanne says the CD inside the digipak doesn't look 'right' because I made it transparent. It is not something that consumers are relatable with as they are not familiar with seeing this - Therefore I learnt that although you have to make your artist unique to stand out, there is a limit with the conventional packaging and promotions that you have to follow for them to be accepted and taken seriously as a product on the market.

Moreover, I came to realise from these viewers feedback that when fitting products to the core target audience you have to be very specific and try not to stray too far from the things that will appeal to your  audience (for example the subtle makeup making young girls aspire to Eva Ellis' beauty) - I think that the secret is to not try to please everybody, as we may have done. When I asked who our target audience was, Whitney ^ replied that she believed it was males - this may be because we used so many elements to entice the male gaze (red lips, red texts, skirts, shots of legs) that we accustomed so many things to males that we forgot about who our MAIN target audience was (females). So I learnt to keep your products specific to who you originally thought would buy it, as no product will please everybody anyway.

Lastly, this made me realise the importance of synergy even more! Sometimes it felt like we were putting so much effort into perfecting and continuing the synergy but people might not even notice. WELL - from feedback it's clear that they do! It has become clear that visual links of an artist's brand image are subconsciously stored in the audience's brain. Which is good because it doesn't look like the producers are trying too hard to create a perfect person. As soon as I asked what the synergy links were, everybody knew (red lips, guitar, natural locations) - This means that whether people like the artist/genre or not, the image will still be memorable to them, therefore leading to an increased amount of artist recognition, and possibility of unlikely fans being drawn to the products through memory.

Although I learnt a lot through my research and planning and tried to project this knowledge of music promoting/advertising in my products, nothing is more helpful and eye-opening than having a second opinion from somebody viewing it for the first time. So I set out to pick some people within my target audience (teenage females) to comment on what they liked, maybe didn't like, and find out what pieces work successfully or not (for example whether they noticed our elements of synergy).

Final Blog Post!

So this is it.

Finally I've finished everything from my ancillary work and music video to the evaluation - and it feels so strange knowing this is my last blog post!

Despite all the stress and deadlines, it has truly been an amazing journey - making our own music video was probably the most interesting thing I've done in college so far and I learned so much from it. Even though in the beginning I didn't know Kellie, Sian and Korima well, we worked together really well and I was lucky to have such lovely people in my group!

At the end I even began to enjoy blogging, although admittedly I couldn't wait for it to be over when we first began the project. :D

To end my final blog post, here's a picture of us all on the first day of filming - the last few moths have been stressful and hectic and wonderful at the same time & it's been an experience I'll never forget!

BYE! :)

Signing Off..

Well, Blogger has been a vital tool throughout our A2 year (even though its not over yet). It's been our diary; we've posted everything we've researched and found, ideas, plans, videos, photos, literally everything! I had a lot of fun producing the music video and ancillary products, and I am quite pleased with the outcome too. We've all worked hard a group to customize our blog and keep it up to date (especially during the filming and editing process). Overall, it has been a great experience and I am really happy with what we have achieved.

GOODBYE BLOGGER!

Final Progress Review Blog

Compared to my blog at AS I felt that this year I went into more detail and depth in terms of research and planning. I explained my reasoning for certain choices and did more independent research when I could. I think I used more ICT than I did last year as I put more effort into creating some videos and looking for unique ways of presenting what could've been large chunks of text.

I think my blog shows the aspects of the research, planning and production of my Advanced Portfolio very effectively as I explained everything and I didn't have any gaps in my blogging work. It was all done in the order that it was supposed to be done (apart from some confusion in the beginning).

Individually, I think that produced over 100 blogging entries and I must say that I am VERY proud of myself as it significantly more than what I had done at AS!

If there was something that I could have changed given the opportunity, I would have tried to find more unique and creative ways of presenting information as well as varying the types of ICT I used.

Evaluation: Q1

In what ways do your media products
use, develop or challenge the forms &
conventions of real media products?

To make our video more mainstream and appeal to the widest audience possible, we decided to involve many aspects of the theories that we learnt about during the research stage. Have a look at the slideshow below to see which theories we applied and how we did it.

Evaluation Question 4

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

We uploaded our music video onto Vimeo as we needed a place to share our video. It allowed people to watch, rate and comment on it as they pleased. With this website, we were able to see how many plays and likes it got, along with people's opinion of it. Unfortunately, we couldn't gather as much feedback on this site as an account was required but luckily I got some through alternative methods such as  interviewing people. According to the statistics, the video wasn't very popular as we only had 14 views. But this may have been because the video was private which meant that only the media students from our college could view it.

Stats from Vimeo

A way to boost the profile of our artist was by putting the video up on Youtube so it could be seen by the public. Youtube is an extremely popular video streaming site and it is used world wide. This is one reason why we chose to upload our video here. Once we looked at the stats, we realised that the video did MUCH better than it did on Vimeo as we got a staggering 229 views and 6 likes! This is much better than we anticipated. The views started off low but then gradually started increasing and hopefully it will carry on like this :)

Stats from Youtube

MUSIC VIDEO

Here is some feedback we got about the music video

The overall feedback for the music video was very good. Majority of the people had very good things to say about it and they genuinely couldn't find any faults. Therefore, I cant really say if there were any points that we could have improved on. Within the feedback video, you can see that we asked a few people that were in our specified target range which were between the ages of 16 to 23. They all mentioned that they really liked our music video and felt that it really suited the genre (indie-pop). One even mentioned that it really appealed to her. This made me see our work in a different light as it didn't seem like just another student music video. It seemed like something that you would actually see on MTV!

Many of the viewers said that they really liked the filter we used as well as the variety of shots. One mentioned that the video reminded her of Taylor Swift. This is great for us to hear as many of the influences we had for this music video came from Taylor Swift. This tells us that we did a great job of portraying that genre as she would also fit into it.

Personally, I think there were some things we could have tweaked. For example I thought we could've had more of a variety of shots for the chorus as it did seem a little to repetitive. However this may be me just being very picky with things as my teacher did say that it was fine to keep it like that as it gave it an indie vibe.

Another thing that I think we could have done was to do my creative edits as the ones we do have were a bit simple. We couldn't really be experimental with editing skills as we did have quite a few problems where our work wouldn't save properly because whenever we came back to it, it would always be out of sync! If we didn't have this problem, we could have tried out new styles and techniques instead of wasting our time trying to put everything back in sync again.

THE DIGIPAK

I've made a few videos to show some of the feedback I received from my ancillary products.

Once again, the overall feeling behind the digipak was very positive. They liked the fact that there were clear visual links between the ancillary products and the music video. I had already planned out the aspects of synergy I would use before the production stage of the music video. In the first video on this blog, one of the questions that were asked was "what do you expect to see on the digipak?" and most of them replied say that they expected to see similar colours and scenery and especially the guitar. This makes me think that the plan I had initially was thought out really well as most of the viewers picked up on the main elements that made the video and thought it would be best to apply it to that. This shows that I followed the conventions that are attached to making the ancillary pieces. I feel really happy about this because I learnt that audiences can often recognise the specific conventions of music genres, sometimes without even realising it!

From all the feedback I received, I can see that there isn’t a lot I could have changed. Personally I think that I could've added a little more to the back panel as it did seem a little plain. Even though all of the necessary information was there, it seemed a little empty to me. No one seemed to pick up on this, which meant that they liked the simplicity of it. What I’ve learned from this feedback is that people liked the simplistic approach which was used for this digipak as it was mainly there to sell the artist and not detract from her. The feedback that I received has definitely made me look at my digipak in a different light as there are things which I don’t personally like which other people thought was a positive contribution towards the digipak.

THE ADVERT

The advert received very similar feedback to that of the digipak. It was all positive and they seemed to like it rather than dislike it for many reasons. So for this I am extremely satisfied. From all the feedback I received I can see that there isn’t a lot I could have changed as I had all of the necessary information that is needed on an advert.

Personally, I think that I could've made more effort in showing off my editing skills by experimenting a little more. But I didn't do this because I wanted it to connect well with my digipak so keeping it simple suited it better.

Considering our target audience, I believe that I have questioned a similar group of people in order to obtain audience feedback. Our artist’s music and therefore our music video and ancillary work are focused to attract females aged 16-23. So looking at the audience feedback, I believe that it is quite accurate to the reaction I would receive.

All of the feedback received was incredibly helpful in terms of understanding what we did well and what we could've improved on if there was anything. The main thing I've learnt from this is that we've been able to successfully make our product appealing to our target audience as well as to those outside of it!

Evaluation Question 3

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

For the research and planning aspect of this project, we mainly used the internet. This is so we could build up our knowledge on the conventions of music videos, digipaks and adverts and use this to come up with ideas for our own ones.

I used Google to search for images that could relate to the planning side of the music video. For example, looking into the costumes, make-up, props, locations colour schemes etc. It also came in very handy for the ancillary work as it was mostly based on researching into different artists' album covers and adverts. This helped us find inspiration for the promotional package for our own artist 'Eva Ellis'. Prezi and Slideshare was also used to present information and research on what I had found out.

YouTube was also very important for researching and analysing music videos. This also helped me recognise some of the theories we learnt being implemented in music videos which I normally wouldn't have recognised before. Looking at these music videos also helped us to get ideas for own video and think of how we could implement without fully copying them.

Blogger was an extremely vital technology as we used it to record our research, planning production and evaluation for the music video and ancillary products. Vimeo was really useful to view whenever it was needed and also to reflect on anything. Its also another way to check out the amount of views we had.

In the production stage of our project, we were able to use state of the art equipment. For example, the JVC camera, the digital camera, the flip camera and the SLR camera. Through out the filming process we used the JVC camera as well as the digital camera and our phones for any behind the scenes footage. They were very easy to use as we already got the hang of using it from the practical work in our AS year. The quality of the footage was just great as it was in HD! The camera enabled us to shoot a range of different shots such us mid shots, close ups etc. We mainly used the zoom for a lot of our panned zooms and close ups.

We used the flip cameras to record any feedback that we had at the screening of the video, music video pitches and ancillary pitches and feedback regarding that. We used the SLR camera (one that belonged to Eli and another that belonged to Rebecca) to take our pictures for the ancillary products. It was great fun to use these and we all took turns (apart from the artist) to take shots that we might want. The quality of these pictures were just AMAZING! Also we used Twitter and Instagram to communicate with our teachers and keep them up to date with the filming progress.

During the editing stage of the project, we were using the Macs A LOT. Through this we were able to use a lot of programmes and software to edit our work. For our music video we used Final Cut Pro to edit it. Its a very unique and fairly easy programme  to use and it let us create the video just how we wanted it. For my ancillary products I used photoshop. I used this to crop images, adjust colour variations and the lighting. The one thing that I didn't like about photoshop was that it didn't have a lot of fonts that I liked. I was going to use two different font in the digipak but because I didn't find anything to compliment our main font 'Silent Reaction', I stuck to using just that. The font was downloaded from 'dafont.com' and then installed into photoshop where I could use it easily.

During both the production and editing stage, the video drive was a VITAL piece of technology. Without it we wouldn't have managed to get a lot done as ALL of our work was saved on this!

One of the techniques we
used on Final Cut Pro was the colour correction. We wanted a vintage-yellowish tint on our video because a lot of our inspiration came from Taylor Swift. She used this and made it seem more natural and earthy and this was the look we were going for. We adjusted the colour wheels ever so slightly because we didn't want to ruin the great natural lighting that we already had.

However the downside to this was that the colour correction came out better on the footage in Richmond Park than it did at the café. This was because it brought out the green more and you only saw a lot of this in Richmond. This made it very noticeable to see where the colour correction came out well and where it didn't.

Another technique we used on Final Cut Pro was the slowing down and speeding up of certain clips. Certain clips we slowed down to make it look more elegant and fit in with the flow and rhythm of the song. An example of this was when she was spinning around or when the leaves were being thrown at her. Whilst doing this we had to be careful of making sure that it was still cutting to the beat.

Other bits we sped up or slowed down because the lip synching was slightly out of synch simply because it wasn't said right. We overcame some parts by doing this but others parts we had to leave as it was. Even though it was a LITTLE bit out we still tried our hardest because we were extreme perfectionists that wanted to get it all right

I almost forgot to mention this but we did have to use photoshop for our music video. This was so that we could put the title of the song and the name of the artist onto the video but without the white background. we selected the white background with the magic wand tool and put it onto a transparent layer and then saved it. Once this was done we imported it into Final Cut Pro and then positioned it where we wanted it.

On Photoshop whilst editing the ancillary products, I adjusted the colour variations to give it the same effect that there was on the video. I added shades of green and red and decreased some of the blue to get it to a similar colour.

I also added outlines to some of the layers on the digipak and advert to make the text more visible. I did this by changing the layer settings and adding a stroke. I used my two central colours (white and red) to make it tie in with all of the products.

I used technologies such as slideshare, prezi, sliderocket and voki to present any information that I wanted to put up on blogger. Other technologies such as animoto, photosnack and makeagif, was used to present pictures and make it look more interesting rather than jus having them there.

Overall, I would say that without these pieces of technologies, I wouldn't have been able to do as much as I did to a high standard and it wouldn't have had that level of professionalism that it does. I could have used different methods to present any information that I had but there was some complications to them. For example, I started off using Kizoa to make a slideshow but once I finished and I wanted to publish it, I found out that I had to pay to do that. There were many other sites that I used and was pleased with but then lead me to that situation. I couldn't really find any other unique websites to do this. If I had found some, I would have used those to create variety within my blog.
Oh and before I forget, here's the animatic we made so you could get a basic preview of how we wanted our music video to look like before the filming stage!

Evaluation Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement)?

COMPARING TO EXISTING PRODUCTS

Rihanna - California King Bed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhBorPm6JjQ
Rihanna - Only Girl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pa14VNsdSYM

In Rihanna's album loud you can see that the main theme based around it is the colour red. It is emphasized throughout her music video, digipak and advert. Her hairstyle across these products is more or less the same as is the visual filter used on them. I've implemented this onto my ancillary pieces by using the same visual filters and make-up as well as similar costumes. This is so you can draw a clearer connection between them all and I believe I have done this very effectively and successfully.

EVALUATION QUESTION 4

I decided to ask a few members of my target audience for feedback on my ancillary and here's what they said ^^

For this question, I made a video using the One True Media website which included all of the interviews with our target audience. However, the website didn't allow me to upload it all without subscribing so I had to do everything again, then split it into different parts and upload them on here separately.

How I reacted to the problem ^^
