Laura Mulvey's theory
"Male gaze"
Robin Thicke- Blurred Lines, is an accurate example of a music video which Mulvey would explain as causing a male gaze. The way in which females are portrayed here is significant to her theory.
- the objectification of women
- men are portrayed as dominant, women are the subject, they are being looked at
- males playing an active role and women playing a passive role
- camera focusing on particular aspects of females in music videos
- camera techniques such as 'tilt' being used when revealing women
- costume worn by females is more revealing and seductive than those worn by males
