Research- Laura Mulvey's theory.

Laura Mulvey's theory
"Male gaze"

Robin Thicke- Blurred Lines, is an accurate example of a music video which  Mulvey would explain as causing a male gaze. The way in which females are portrayed here is significant to her theory.

  • the objectification of women
  • men are portrayed as dominant, women are the subject, they are being looked at
  • males playing an active role and women playing a passive role
  • camera focusing on particular aspects of females in music videos
  • camera techniques such as 'tilt' being used when revealing women
  • costume worn by females is more revealing and seductive than those worn by males
